Zambayoni:

This HOWTO will guide you in the installation of SabayonLinux on an Intel Mac wiping the whole hard drive and using all the available space for our beloved Operating System. You can install Mac OSX and even Windows XP on a USB drive (with GPT) if you want, but that's not covered here.
NOTE: with the current RC2 DVDs (not the miniEditions!) you have to do two extra steps.

STEP A: Starting MAC OSX Install Disk 1.
Insert your Mac OSX Install Disk 1 and keep the "C" key pressed until the system the Installer.
We are going to wipe the whole hard drive and change the partition table format to MS-DOS (MBR) instead of GPT.
When the Installer is ed, lauch the Disk Utilty, erase all the partitions and under Options, choose "MS-DOS partition table" instead of "GPT (GUID Partition Table)".
NOTE: you can do this step even on the LiveDVD/LiveCD, but that's the way I've tried

STEP B: Booting SabayonLinux CD/DVD.
Like we did for the Mac OSX Install Disk 1, keep the "C" key pressed at boot until the system s our beloved CD/DVD boot prompt.
NOTE: you can eject CDs/DVDs by pressing both right and left mouse buttons at boot until the media gets out.
Then, choose the parameters that you want (press F2,F3,F4 for more info) and then start the boot procedure.

STEP C: Updating Sabayon Linux Installer by hand (Internet connection required)
NOTE: if you are running SabayonLinux >RC2 or the RC2 miniEditions skip this step.
Once you're on your favourite Desktop Environment, open a terminal and type:

sudo su

cd /tmp

wget http://www.lxnaydesign.net/sabayon/installer/usr-lib-anaconda.tar.bz2

tar xjf usr-lib-anaconda.tar.bz2

rm -rf /opt/anaconda/usr/lib/anaconda/*

mv -f anaconda/* /opt/anaconda/usr/lib/anaconda/

rm -rf anaconda

exit

The Installer is now updated and ready to Install into your Intel Mac.

STEP C2: Updating GRUB to support Intel Mac
1000
s boot (Internet connection required).
NOTE: if you are running SabayonLinux >RC2 or the RC2 miniEditions skip this step.

sudo su

cp /mnt/livecd/boot/grub /tmp -Rp

mount -t tmpfs none /mnt/livecd/boot/grub/

mv /tmp/grub/* /mnt/livecd/boot/grub/

cd /mnt/livecd/boot/grub/

rm -rf stage2v

At this point, if you have x86 CD/DVD just do (on the same shell!):

wget http://www.lxnaydesign.net/sabayon/grub-mactel/stage2-x86

It:HOWTO: Partimage Guide

Zambayoni:

startx

Digitiamo:

mkdir /mnt/backup

e poi:

mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/backup

Fatto ciò digitiamo:

partimage

Image file to create/use

e qui scriveremo:

/mnt/backup/nomefile.gz

Restore partition from an image file

I have an existing Gentoo install with 3 reiser4 partitions /, /home, and /media. When trying Sabayon on a spare partition, I noticed the installer thought /media was swap, but was marked as leaving the data untouched so I wasn't too worried. However, on reboot, Sabayon mounted it as swap, destroying the file system, so when I eventually booted back into Gentoo, it was gone: unrecognized and unmountable. fsck.reiser4 was not working from within Gentoo, but rebooting to the old Conrad disc I had installed from and running it happily saved tons of data by running it with --build-sb and then --build-fs as it asked for. A happy ending to a stressful few minutes - backup and keep a sharp eye on that installer.
Linux (also known as GNU/Linux) is a Unix-like computer operating system. It is one of the most prominent examples of open source development and free software; unlike proprietary operating systems such as Windows or Mac OS, all of its underlying source code is available to the general public for anyone to freely use, modify, and redistribute.

According to wikipedia.

Linux is the combination of the Linux kernel, the GNU set of operating system relates applications, and other FOSS (Free Open Source software) software.

Linux is the basis of Gentoo GNU Linux which is the basis of Sabayon GNU Linux or Sabayon Linux.
To find out which modules you must use..
the most simple thing to do is cat log file and grep for eth entry's ..
This will work if your Sabayon linux have already recognized your ethernet card (most cases).
In this example we look for eth0 and eth1 entry's, so if you have more cards just put at the end
eth[0,1,2,3,n] n = last ethernet card.

cat /var/log/messages|grep eth[0,1]\:

Jul 22 07:46:44 mazinga [4294688.198000] e100: eth0: e100_probe: addr 0xd4000000, irq 19, MAC addr 00:06:29:E9:77:40
Jul 22 07:46:44 mazinga [4294688.213000] eth1: VIA Rhine II at 0x17800,00:11:2f:09:fc:1f, IRQ 20.
Jul 22 07:46:44 mazinga [4294688.214000] eth1: MII PHY found at address 1, status 0x786d advertising 01e1 Link 45e1.
Jul 22 07:46:59 mazinga [4294756.820000] e100: eth0: e100_watchdog: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex

from the lines above we can see that wi need to use e100 and VIA Rhine (which uses via_rhine)
to view all the modules your kernel support do:

ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net

and for detailed information about a module (for via_rhine in this case)

modinfo via_rhine

in case you don't have running modules in your distro then you could try

lspci | grep Ethernet

00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 78 )
00:13.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 08 )

And google for modules which support your card

If you do have multiple ethernet cards, good practice is to put aliases into
/etc/modules.d/aliases ,so in this particular case it would look like

alias eth0 e100
alias eth1 via_rhine

This will prevent swapping eth0 and eth1 which occur because of some bugs in coldplug/udev, as
the first driver which get loaded becomes eth0, and we don't want that. We need to know exactly
which card is eth0 and eth1 to configure our network.

Introduction
First, it is entirely possible to happily run Sabayon 3.5 Pod (the 700 meg mini edition) without any of the following steps. If you have no interest in compiling your own applications or maintaining 100% Gentoo compatability then you are already good to go. Sabayon 3.5 as stands is a complete operating system and will work fine in binary (no compiling) mode. However if you truly need Gentoo compatability or the ability to bring packages in from the other various Gentoo overlays then the following steps should position you to do so.

We will start with one single assumption, that you have actually already finished installing Pod. It is from that point, actually rebooting into the system and functioning from the install that we will proceed.

Adding portage support to Sabayon 3.5 Pod
Before starting on this, you're going to want to download the portage database appropriate for your architecture. Please point your browser to:
http://www.sabayonlnux.org/mod/mirrors/  Choose a mirror.

If you are using the 32 bit Sabayon Pod, you will download the following file: Sabayon-Linux-x86-3.5-Pod.portage.db.tar.bz2

If you are using the 64 bit Sabayon Pod, you will download this file: Sabayon-Linux-x86_64-3.5-Pod.portage.db.tar.bz2

Once you have downloaded the appropriate portage database file, you will do the following commands:

Now we are really ready to begin. From here on out we will be working ONLY in command line and as root. Yes some of this can be done with GUI applications, but trust me when I say it's faster and easier using command line. We will start with a little preparation work.

This will bring your system 100% up to current. So now we can get into the meat of the matter of bringing your system up to Gentoo compatability. As one command we can install all the packages we need. You may want to install gcc separately if you end up with errors regarding gcc. This may be attributed to needing to add the version number.

Add the following USE flags to /etc/make.conf

Depending on your connection speed and the strength of your CPU this can take some time to accomplish. Once this is done we need to issue an few more time consuming commands.

After all that is done ... congrats, your all finished. Everything should be working for you now.

Añade las siguientes banderas USE a /etc/make.conf

5. ¡Felicidades!
Eliminando Paquetes
Package Management
Equo has some advanced functions for managing community repositories, this page is designed to give a more detailed overview of equos community repository management abilities.There are a lot of things you can do on Community Repositories, just be patient and read the output carefully.

Adding Packages
1. Emerge the package of your choosing

At this stage any standard Portage functions can be used, for instance to change use flags

# Run the status command to check your repository is working

2. Scan the system for new packages and package them using the repos update function

This will present you with a list of packages that have been added, and will ask if you want to add them to your repo, if you do, select yes. If you don't want to be prompted about this you can use the --noask amendment, for instance

3. Now the packages have been added to the local database all you need to do is sync your mirrors, to do this simple run this command:

This will connect to your mirror(s) and upload the packages, md5sums, a new database revision and RSS feeds etc
4. If you have added your own repository as a client you will see that there are updates available!
5. Congratulations!
Removing Packages

In 1983 Richard Stallman started the GNU Project with the goal of creating a UNIX-like, POSIX-compatible operating system composed entirely of free software. Development began in 1984, and a year later he created the Free Software Foundation and wrote the first draft of the GNU General Public License (GPLv1). By the early 1990s, the project had produced or collected many necessary operating system components, including libraries, compilers, text editors, and a Unix shell, and the mid-level portions of the OS were almost complete. The upper level could be supplied by the X Window System, but the lower level which consisted of a kernel, device drivers, and daemons was still incomplete.

In 1990 the GNU project began developing the Hurd kernel which was based on the Mach microkernel, but development proved difficult and proceeded slowly.

In 1991, Linus Torvalds began to work on the Linux kernel while he was attending the University of Helsinki. Torvalds originally created the Linux kernel as a non-commercial replacement for the Minix kernel; he later changed his original non-free license to the GPLv2, which differed primarily in that it also allowed for commercial redistribution. Although dependent on the Minix userspace at first, work from both Linux kernel developers and the GNU project allowed Linux to work with GNU components. Thus Linux filled the last major gap in running a complete, fully functional free operating system.
This will be my log on how I installed Sabayon on an HP DV9000 series pavillion laptop and the hangups I have doing it
I'm no power user but I have a bit of experience with Linux. I fell in love with the way Sabayon put their distro together and felt I should give back to the community. HP made no new freinds with this laptop but since I invested the money in it I might as well give it a shot.
Version of Sabayon Linux
As root using "uname -a":

Linux localhost 2.6.19-gentoo-r4 #1 SMP Sat Jan 6 03:12:26 UTC 2007 x86_64 AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-52 AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

What works out of the Install:
The Install, which I must say worked without a hitch (Unlike Ubuntu which required a 'napic' command to boot), Installed smoothly (Great Job to the support staff on that one!!).
The Video, USB, keyboard, mouse, 3d AIGLX, Power management (when enabled), DVD RW, Ethernet ,as I know of, all worked automagically. It plays DVD's, Beryl worked with absolutely no (You heard it) NO extra configuration.VGA Out works.

Concieved Issues:
Concieved issues:
#The sound is working but I have a problem getting it to work with Netscape and Flash. NOTE: The fix for this on the forums.
#Wifi appears to be working out of the box but this is the third Install because of Wifi. What I did to get the Wifi to work is leave it switched off for the install. (Thats all I did differently) Then I switch it on after the system is fully booted up and it works. I tried using the 'bwml6.inf' drivers from the Vista Install and 'ndiswrapper' it didn't work. But bcm43xx does (see the bcm43xx guide on this wiki for more information) (I know, weird huh?). I even tried Linuxant.
#.The quick play bar isn't working as of yet.
#.I don't even know what programs to use to try and get the web cam working.
#. Haven't tested the microphones.
#. Haven't tested the modem.
#. Haven't tested the TV out.
#. Other than the quick bar on the Docking station, it appears to work.

This isn't a complete proposal yet, just putting some thoughts out flouthing around in my head...

* Framework
** Manages a collection of configuration files (I would suggest XML) that describe the modules and how the framework should use them.
** Acts as the 'Controller' in the Model-View-Controller pattern.
** Language: Should be a language that can bind to other languages relatively easy.

* Modules
** Each module has a configuration file needed by the framework (I would suggest using XML)
** Each module uses the same interface that is called by the framework
** Each module should consist of 2 parts a 'View' and a 'Model' interacting through the 'Controller (our framework)'
***View: provides user interaction
***Model: provides the functionality

NOTE: making the modules standalone tools and letting the framework spawn those processes would probably ease the language binding problem, but has this other issues? Maybe a second proposal for this... Need to think about it...

NOTE: shouldn't it be possible to create a framework that is able to deal with both embedded and standalone tools... Need to think about it...

This howto explains howto install/use e220 and e169 hsdpa modems in sabayon. Huawei e220 and e169 are supported natively by Linux, over usbserial.ko (usbserial-generic) interface. Linux kernel versions prior to 2.6.20 have some problems with it, as the SCSI CDROM fakevolume with drivers for Microsoft systems gets automounted by usbstorage.ko module, preventing serial device /dev/ttyUSB0 from working properly.

1) You need huawei workaround package http://oozie.fm.interia.pl/src/huawei.tar.bz2

2) Extract package to directory (default is huawei)

3) Run make generic_install as root

4) Run make config as root

Next step is to edit /etc/wvdial.conf with your favourite text editor as root

Here is sample of my wvdial.conf

[Dialer Defaults]
Ask Password = 0

Dial Command = ATDT

When you type wvdial it will connect to internet with full speed as default.

If you want to connect to internet using gprs only add this also to your wvdial.conf

Zambayoni:

Avant Window Navigator (AWN) is a nice application dock for Gnome (might work in KDE, I havent tested it).

When writing this howto, the ebuild for AWN was not working. So this is how to build and install it from the svn sources.

Install bzr
sudo emerge bzr

If sudo does not work try su

Fetch the Sources
To download the bzr sources, open a terminal and type the following:

bzr checkout http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~awn-core/awn/trunk avant-window-navigator

Once it is done downloading, enter the directory so we can begin compiling

cd avant-window-navigator

Compile and Install
Now we are ready to compile and install, the following commands will take care of that:

./autogen.sh
make
sudo make install

NOTE: If you are using 3.4a and sudo doesn't work for you, either use "su -" command to become root, or read HOWTO: Enable sudo

Fix Libraries
For some reason, AWN installs its libraries in /usr/local/lib instead of in /usr/lib. So you will get an error trying to run it. To solve this, I just symlinked the libraries like this:

sudo ln -s /usr/local/lib/libawn.so.0.0.1 /usr/lib/libawn.so
sudo ln -s /usr/local/lib/libawn.so.0.0.1 /usr/lib/libawn.so.0

Run the Program
After fixing those libraries, AWN should run, you can run it in a terminal like this:

avant-window-navigator &

It should have created a menu entry under Accessories as well

Auto Start at Login
xfce4

Open the main menu and navigate to Settings -> Autostarted Applications

Click on add and enter the following information:
Name: Avant Window Navigator
Command: avant-window-manager

That should be it! Enjoy your new dock!
HOWTO: Installing CUPS Print to PDF driver

Zambayoni:

Introduction
Although some applications (e.g. OpenOffice.org) have built-in support for 'printing' PDF files, and for applications without built-in support there is an installed Print to File (PDF) driver with Sabayon Linux, for some reason the Print to File (PDF) 'printer' does not appear in the list of available printers when I select Print in some applications. Therefore, if you want to install the CUPS driver to print to a PDF file, you can use the procedure given below.

Installation and configuration
1. In a Terminal window, type the following as root:

or, alternatively, if you prefer to use Entropy instead of Portage:

2. K Menu > Applications > Settings > GNOME Settings > Printing

3. Double-click on 'New Printer'

4. If not already selected, set 'Printer Type:' to 'Local Printer'

5. Set 'Use a detected printer:' to 'Virtual PDF Printer'

6. Click 'Forward'

7. Set 'Select Manufacturer:' to 'Generic', and set 'Model:' to 'postscript color printer rev4' (or 'CUPS-PDF' if that is listed)

8. Leave 'Driver:' as 'Standard (Suggested)'

9. Click 'Forward'

10. Enter a name of your choice (must be without spaces) in 'Enter a Name:', e.g. Print_to_PDF_file

11. Enter a description of your choice in 'Enter a Description:', e.g. Virtual printer (print to PDF file)

12. Click 'Apply'.

13. When you select Print_to_file_PDF from the list of available printers when you come to print from an application, the PDF file will be saved in the directory /var/spool/cups-pdf/<your username>/. Note that that directory will be created automatically the first time you 'print' to PDF.

14. Optionally, you can create a shortcut (Desktop Config File) on your Desktop to open the directory mentioned in Step 13 above.

15. Optionally, edit the file /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf as root to get cups-pdf to 'print' PDF documents to your desktop instead of /var/spool/cups-pdf/<your username>/, by changing the line:

{{File|/etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf|

#Out /var/spool/cups-pdf/${USER}

}}
to
{{File|/etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf|

Out ${HOME}/Desktop

}}

16. Optionally, if you prefer to be prompted for a file name so that you can save the PDF file wherever you want and give it the name you want, then do the following instead of Items 14 and 15 above:

Make sure the package zenity is installed (it should be, by default, with Sabayon Linux):

If zenity is not installed then install it using either Portage or Entropy:

or

Using a text editor of your choice, create the following script in your home directory and give it a meaningful name such as cups-pdf_script.sh:

{{File|cups-pdf_script.sh|

#!/bin/bash
CURRENT_PDF="${1}"
CURRENT_USER="${2}"
DISPLAY=:0.0
export DISPLAY
XAUTHORITY=/home/${CURRENT_USER}/.Xauthority
export XAUTHORITY
PDFNAME=$(zenity --file-selection --save --confirm-overwrite)
mv "$CURRENT_PDF" "$PDFNAME"

}}

Make the file executable:

Edit the file /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf, find the line starting "#PostProcessing" and change it to:

Restart CUPS:

Now, when you select the Print_to_PDF_file virtual printer in your applications, a pop-up window will appear allowing you to select the target directory for the PDF file and to enter a file name of your choice.

Procedure to get Sabayon Linux x86-64 3.26 to work with a Belkin Bluetooth keyboard (model F8T040), 14.03.07
Carry out the following steps in the order given:

STEP 1

The first thing you need to do is find the MAC address of the Bluetooth keyboard. To do this, press the Connect button on the underside of the Belkin Bluetooth keyboard, and in a Terminal window type:

Your MAC address will be different, so just use it instead of "00:03:C9:52:14:80" in the Steps that follow.

STEP 2

I believe the following is required to enable 'automatic' reconnection with the keyboard a) when it goes to sleep and you then press a key for several seconds, and b) when the PC boots and you then press a key for several seconds.

Change
HIDD_ENABLE=false
to
HIDD_ENABLE=true

Change
HIDD_OPTIONS=””
to
HIDD_OPTIONS=”--connect 00:03:C9:52:14:80”

(HCID_ENABLE=true should already be in the file.)

STEP 3

Add the following at the end of the file:

{{File|/etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf|
device 00:03:C9:52:14:80 {
name "Belkin Keyboard";
auth enable;
encrypt enable;
}

}}

STEP 4

A window entitled KDE Bluetooth Framework may pop up stating “Failed to connect to the SDP server. Please make sure that sdpd is running; without it other devices will not be able to find out which services your computer offers.” I just ignored it and clicked OK.

STEP 5

Do the following just to check that the keyboard is still paired with Sabayon:

If the scan does not find the keyboard any more, press the Connect button on the underside of the Belkin Bluetooth keyboard and repeat the hcitool scan command.

STEP 6

From now on the Bluetooth keyboard should work. If you press a key you should be able to see what you type appear on screen.

NOTES
