New page

These are the results of installing Sabayon 5.0 GNOME on a Thinkpad T61 (purchased March 2008).

I am starting this article to kick-off installation instructions/issues for Thinkpads.

Installation Instructions for Sabayon 5.0 64bit edition: if you have the nvidia card, use "xdriver=nv" as an option. The default driver causes a kernel panic when used in conjunction with a 140M. (Intel integrated graphics are untested.)

System Specs are as follows:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
nVidia Quadro 140M
1680x1050 WXGA+ LCD
Thinkpad BIOS
2 GB 667 DDR2 RAM -->Expandable to 4GB
160 GB SATA Drive (Maxtor)
Realtek Intel Audio
Intel Centrino 4965AGN WiFi

Synaptics TouchPad,
eraser mouse,
5 in 1 SMART CARD reader (not tested)
USB 2.0
FireWire port (not tested)
CardBus (not tested)
ExpressCard (not tested)

Installed Sabayon Linux 5.0 x64 (64bit) Live DVD (GNOME) using unetbootin and a USB drive.

Positives:
Laptop runs at full resolution with compositing despite not using official drivers.
Once video driver issues are resolved, everything works out of the box.
Wifi requires no setup and is easy to use. It even works on the DVD.
Both the touchpad and the eraser mouse work.

Currently Unresolved Problems:
As mentioned above, the nVidia drivers currently included in entropy do not support this laptop's graphics card.
OpenGL is therefore painfully slow.

I've not been able to get pulseaudio to work correctly on this computer (although this is true of every distro I have used).
However, ALSA works fine.
